A Big 'D'epature...

While I expected Bill Parcells to return for one more year, it's clear as a Cowboys fan, I should be thankful for his time in Dallas.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Tuna, and while I respect his body of work, I'm not terribly upset he's heading out of 'Big D'. He's leaving the franchise much better than when he began in 2003, so the question becomes, who is going to take the helm and continue the improvements of the Dallas Cowboys?

His timing was terrible, and because of that, Jerry Jones' options are very limited. It's speculated that phone calls will be placed to recently retired Bill Cowher, Bob Stoops of Oklahoma, and Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans. Cowher and Stoops are expected to decline, while Fisher is a possibility. Without a long-term contract in place, owner Bud Adams might be willing to part with his coach in return for a nice compensation package.

The next group in the coaching gauntlet is thought to be Bears Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera, current University of Arkansas (Jerry Jones' alma mater) head coach Houston Nutt, Texans Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman, and 49ers Offensive Coordinator Norv Turner.

Rivera would be an excellent choice. He's young and leads an excellent defense, but Jerry Jones has stated he may not be willing to go through the learning curve of a first-time head coach. Houston Nutt seems unlikely, as well as Mike Sherman since he'd probably want some control; this leaves Norv Turner as the front-runner. Turner helped shape Troy Aikman into a Hall of Fame quarterback, so working with a young Tony Romo seems like a good fit.

As a Cowboys fan, I appreciate Turner for his work in the early 90's, however, I question whether he's better suited as a coordinator or head coach. His tenures in Washington and Oakland aren't accurate measuring sticks, but my gut tells me Jerry Jones should at least consider other candidates.

Is a return by Jimmy Johnson a possibility? Considering the lack-of-success by coaches who return to old jobs, I wouldn't place a heavy wager.

Consider Ron Rivera. Consider Norv Turner. Consider Ravens Defensive Coordinator Rex Ryan. Don't waste your time with Wade Phillips or another college coach.

There are plenty of options available, and with the name and reputation of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones should be able to make a splash. Because I believe he learned his lesson with Chan Gailey and Dave Campo, expect to see an excellent choice for the Dallas Cowboys on the sidelines in 2007.
